Mostyn Hall

On Monday 7th July we took ourselves to Mostyn Hall, the ancestral home of Lord Mostyn.

In spite of early rain and wind it turned out to be a beautiful morning when we arrived in front of the impressive stone edifice. What cheered some of us even more was the presence of some vintage motor cars parked alongside.

Our guide, Sue, described the various periods of architecture that were visible on the exterior of the building and introduced us to the elements of the great hall, the dining room and the drawing room that were of the Elizabethan/Jacobean period. She then gave us an extensive account of the family line through one of the most complete family art collections in Wales. Each painting told a story of the present Lord’s connections through history right back to Ieuan Fychan of Pengwern in the mid fifteenth century. She told us that the Savages came from the Wirral, (as do the Wildes!). It was, she told us, a stipulation that this form of history was essential to save death duties having to be paid on the paintings.

We then departed for lunch. It was good to see a good turn-out for the visit.
