Basic rules for walkers

  1. Always wear suitable clothing. Strong shoes, waterproof clothes etc
  2. Remember to take enough food and water suitable for the length of the walk
  3. Register with the 999 emergency text service
  4. Keep to single file on roads
  5. Keep together crossing fields with livestock in, and leave gates as you found them
  6. Beware of ticks. Check for ticks after a walk and remove any you find.
  7. If you think it necessary, make the walk leader aware of any significant medical conditions, allergies, etc
  8. Please don’t walk with a phone in your hand. They are easily broken if you trip                            

For leaders

  1. Always do a recce before a walk
  2. Assess possible hazards on the recce - broken styles, difficult terrain etc
  3. If possible, factor in an escape route
  4. Check the weather forecast. Be prepared to cancel or adapt if necessary
  5. Carry maps and a charged phone
  6. Make sure someone knows where you’re going and when you’re expected back
  7. Please do a risk assessment before taking others out
