Basic rules for walkers
- Always wear suitable clothing. Strong shoes, waterproof clothes etc
- Remember to take enough food and water suitable for the length of the walk
- Register with the 999 emergency text service
- Keep to single file on roads
- Keep together crossing fields with livestock in, and leave gates as you found them
- Beware of ticks. Check for ticks after a walk and remove any you find.
- If you think it necessary, make the walk leader aware of any significant medical conditions, allergies, etc
- Please don’t walk with a phone in your hand. They are easily broken if you trip
For leaders
- Always do a recce before a walk
- Assess possible hazards on the recce - broken styles, difficult terrain etc
- If possible, factor in an escape route
- Check the weather forecast. Be prepared to cancel or adapt if necessary
- Carry maps and a charged phone
- Make sure someone knows where you’re going and when you’re expected back
- Please do a risk assessment before taking others out
