Having been round the Welsh side of Shrewsbury Heritage Trail last year, thirteen of us set out to do the English side this year.
We started where we left off last year at the top of Wyle Cop
Wyle Cop is allegedly the longest uninterrupted row of shops in the UK but we were not here for shopping.
Our first stop was the Lion Inn built in 1775-8 as a coaching inn.
Then onto Henry Tudor Inn built 1426 Where Henry Tudor stayed on his way to defeat Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth.
Next door to that was The Tudor Gallery with amazing, curved mullion windows on the first floor.
Shortly before the English Bridge we turned right and walked along the top of the town walls to the Cathedral. This is a remarkably plain building both inside and out although it does have some interesting stained glass.
After a short walk up Belmont we reached St Alkmund’s Church. This was reached after climbing some steps and is reputed to be the highest point in Shrewsbury.
From there we climbed the Bear Steps which had been the original marketplace. Just beyond this was Grope Lane. Some members tried wandering down the lane and were disappointed to come out unscathed.
This left us with a few minutes to spare before our lunch at “Number 4” which everyone seemed to enjoy.
